Drummer Gustavo Cortinas is caught live in concert aa gig in Chicago back in 2022 with a pst bop team of Drew Hansen/tp, Artie Black/ts, Matthew Davis/tb, Juaquin Garcia/p and Kitt Lyles/b on this double disc release. Most of the tunes are in the 10-4 minute range, so everyone gets a chance to stretch out a bit in a feature, but never overstaying their welcome. Black is rich on the groover “Overture” , and Davis bops till he drops for “Timing Is Everything” Lyles produces a hip intro to the modal “Wish Could Be There Now” and the horns sizzle for “Hanaki” and the festive Latin “La Rute…”. Impressive, swinging and creative.
