Idit Shner: 9 Short Stories

Idit Shner plays alto and soprano on nine tunes ranging from 3-6 minutes. No long stretched out solos, just rich melodies and ideas well delivered. On soprano, she’s delicate and delightful with pianist Josh Hanlon on “Departure” while the rest of the rhythm team, James Driscoll/b and Stockton Helbing/dr deliver a rich cadence on “First Waltz.” Shner’s time on the alto sax has her in post bop form with a sharp tone on the intricate and tricky “Reviesion,” a dreamy and floating “Passion Flower” and a pair of fun boppers, “Arrival” and “Angst As Usual.” Hanlon pulls out the Hammond B3 for an assertively modal “Not Friends” and Shner eats it up like  Pac Man. Succinct yet swinging.
