Kyle Nasser takes his team of Jeff Miles/g, Dov Manski/p, Chris Van Voorst/b and Devin Drobka/dr through a collection of sophisticated and complex modern jazz originals. Except for his soprano on the meditative “Rise,” he brings his autumnal tenor sax to the focus as on the obliquely post bop “For Rick B.” and the angular and shadowy “Angelique.” The team shows the lyrical side of modern sounds on “Radiator Lady” while the team gets soft as a pillow on “Trip to Lester’s.” Miles gets a couple chances to take the spotlight, and shines well on the tangential “Gyorgi Goose” and rocks out with the band on “Restive Soul.” Heady stuff here.
