Alan Chan Jazz Orchestra: Shrimp Tale

Composer and band leader Alan Chan puts together an impressive big band album with some of LA’s top drawer artists like “Wayne Bergeron/tp, Jeff Driskill/ts, Andy Langham/p, Vince Trombetta Jr/reeds and Andy Martin/tb on a collection of original charts and tunes. Each composition has some intriguing intricacies to them to set up well conceived solos. The horns create a daybreak lightness on “Tsu Zu Ku” which frame solos by Kevin garren/ss and Ken Fisher/bs, while Bergeron and Andrew Synowiec/g (of Big Phat Band fame) get some space on the energetic “Shrimp Tale.” A couple pieces included narration by Lauren Marks, with “Monte Alban” surrounded by guitar and bass and “Solita” hinting at Gil Evans, with it’s muted horns and woodwinds. Moody and pensive “Rene’s Barcarolle” shows off the various sections while “Ranco Calaveras” changes scenes like a vacation slide show, with Trobetta’s clarinet carrying the day. Definitely well put together with a good mix of brain and brawn.
