Kathy Kosins: The Ladies Of Cool

Subtitled “A love letter to O’Connor, O’Day, Christy, London” this charming disc has vocalist Kathy Kosins  delivers a tribute to the “vo-cool” babes of the 50s and 60s by doing keeping the attitude, but necessarily the signature songs alive. She teams up with LA pianist/arranger Tamir Hendleman, Paul Keller-Kevin Axt/b, Graham Dechter/g, Bob Leatherbarrow/dr-vib, Steve Wilkerson/winds, and Gilbert Castellanos/tp-fh for some breezy and well crafted takes of songs like “All I Need is You” and Lullaby “Kissing Bug.” Her voice is less fragile and nasal than he heroines, and a bit more glassy as she shoes on the take with Dechter on the lovely” Lullaby in Rhythm.” A samba’d take of “Where Are You” is a touch of genius while the late night sound with trumpeter Castellanos on “Don’t Wait Up For Me” is attractively nourish.  Light and breezy like daffodils.
