Best known for his work with Snarky Puppy, pianist Bill Laurance shows another side of his palate on this album of originals teamed with the rich Untold Orchestra. The pieces have a warm and cinematic feel to them, mixing a jazz trio with wondrous orchestrations. There’s a modern richness to the harmonies on “Before the Sun” with the title tune setting the pace for a lush and majestic atmosphere. Bass and strings converse on “Above All” and there’s an urgency to the strings on “All at Once” and the jagged “Sots”. Hints of Vaughan Williams elegance are heard on “Right Where We Are” and Laurance shows his understated elegance on “Strange Love”. A fragrant bloom.
