Josean Jacobo Trio: Herencia Criolla

Pianist Josean Jacobo mixes traditional Afro Cuban sounds and post bop jazz with his team of Daroll Mendez/b, Otoniel Nicolas/dr and a collection of guests on this recent album. Almost every tune features a taped introduction of some tripbal chants, village sounds or folk atmospheres that eventually lead into the main theme, such as a hard driing “Herencia Criolla” or the joyfully high hat pulsed “San Miguel”. Alto star Miguel Zenon adds modal moments to the dark sizzle of “Dos Locos” and Ramon Vazuez brings his l yrical bass for a solo on the festive “Bachet Rosa”. Jacobo is rich on the pretty village atmosphere of “Dolores” and the team work around tricky corners for “Cana Brava”. Earthy t reassures.
