Bruce Harris: Soundview

Trumpeter Bruce Harris takes you back to the classic and vintage days of boppers like Blue  Mitchell and Kenny Dorham on this swinging collection of tunes with a nifty team of Sullivan Fortner/p, David Wong/b  and Aaron Kimmel/dr. Samara McClendon adds her willowy voice to the sleek “If You Were Mine” and Harris’ own misty ballad “Bird of Red and Gold”. Other than that, Harris’ sleek and genteel horn breezes through his cool title tune, easily swings to “Satellite” and mutes around Kimmel’s deft cymbals on his “Maybe It’s Hazy”. He alternates tones and mutes and cries on a clever “Ellington Suite” and is classy on the polished “Hank’s Pranks” and “ Saucer Eyes”. Has the torch been passed from Roy Hargrove?
