Matt DeMerritt: Fools Journey

Matt DeMerritt  plays a wide variety of saxes, mostly focusing on tenor, while also adding flute and some percussion on the soulful collection of post bop originals and covers. He’s supported by Sam barsh/p-key, Kaveh Rastagar-Jonny Flaugher/b, Gene Coye-Brock Avery-Scott Seiver/dr and various cameo guests, including some hip table work by Satnam Ramgotra on a funky read of Joe Henderson’s “Earth”. On tenor, DeMerritt delivers a gorgeous bel canto take of Bert Bacharach’s “A House Is Not A Hoe” and is Eddie Harris gritty with Jamelle Adisa on “Elixer”. DeMerrit’s reed is velvety with Barsh on a genteel “Loner’s Waltz”, with all of the songs sandwiched between a collection of electronics, reeds and elliptical noodling that create playful bookends to a rich novel of songs.
