Ant Law: The Sleeper Wakes

British guitarist Ant Law teams up with a core unit of Michael Chillingworth/as-bcl, Ivo Neame/p, Tom Farmer/b and James Maddren/dr along with a pair of cameo guests on this post bop collection of mostly originals. The lone cover is a remodeled, relaxed and laconic “My Old Flame” with dreamy interplay between Chillngworth’s bass clarinet and Law’s impressionistic guitar floating over Maddren’s brushes. Farmer lays down a funky march with Maddren on the soulful “2 Bridges” while he bows reflectively with Neame and the elegiac guitarist on “Our Church”. Law goes it alone on a lovely and contemplative “Remembering” and “Liable to Wyble, while cheerful when the team joins in with bass clarinet on “Harvest”. Tenor saxist Tim Garland and percussionist Adam Kovacs give a tropical feel to the resonant “The Sleeper Sleeps” and the team snaps and sizzles to “The Sleeper Wakes”. Cohesive connections.
