Toft Olsen: Special

Here’s a modern day crooner that you’re gonna like. From Denmark, Toft Olsen mixes some vocool jazz standards with hip originals on this agreeable session with a team of Thomas Vang/b, Heine Hansen/p and Morten Lund/dr. He’s got a sound and deliver not unlike Kenny Rankin, particularly on his own folksy title track, while he gives a nice hep slink alongside Vang on “Crazy” and gives a poppish feel a la Barry Manilow on the upbeat “Maybe I’m Too Blind To See.” He gives a rich desultory take reminiscent of Chet Baker during “I Fall In Love To Easily” and is richly intimate on a duet with Hansen for “All Of You.” A mix of mist and mystique is evoked on “Where Or When” and he dances like Astaire to Lund’s brushes on the suave “Fascinating Rhythm.” Any trips to the US coming up?
