STREET CORNER SYMPHONIES…The Ember Records Doowop Collection 1956-64

Founded by Duke Ellington’s son Mercer, Embers Records was known for producing a solid R&B catalogue. This two cd, 60 song collection shows how even a David like label can compete against the Goliaths of the recording industry.

Groups that signed on to Ember Records include famous vocal doo wop groups such as The Five Satins and The Silhouettes, from which came big popular hits such as “I Remember (In The Still Of The Night)”, “The The Aisle”, “Shadows” , “I’ll Be Seeing You” and the classic “Get A Job” which had a chorus that became the name for the retro group Sha Na Na. And, though other groups may not be as familiar to you such as Kenny Esquire and the Starlights, The Marktones,  The Concords and The Boptones, you’re not going to complain about the quality of harmonies and rhythms such as “Pretty Brown Eyes”, “Hold Me Close” “Ill Always Say Please” and “I Had A Love”. This joyful collection is simply a reminder of the surfeit of excellent vocal groups, unfortunately overlooked but given a second chance here.
