Wayne Alpern: Jukebox

Producer and arranger Wayne Alpern creates a Mozartian wood ensemble interpretation of material ranging from jazz to pop standards in a most delightful way. He utilizes the Dorian Wind Quintet, made up of Gretchen Pusch/fl, Gerard Reuter/ob, Benjamin Fingland/cl, Karl Kramer-Johansen and Adrian Morejon/bassoon for richly palpable readings such as an elegiac take of the “Downton Abbey” theme or a peppy “Surry With The Fringe On Top”. Reuter’s oboe is elegant during “I’ve Grown Accustomed To Her Face” with Morejon’s bassoon mixing with snapping fingers on a fun “Blue Moon” while brooding amongst the reeds on Duke Ellington’s “In A Sentimental Mood”. Charlie Parker’s “Ornithology”, The Beatles’ “Penny Lane” and Jerome Kern’s “All The Things You Are” sit comfortable alongside a “Bartok Chorale” as they are all pureed through the Waring Blender of vintage classical era woodwind serenades.
