The Jerry Granelli Trio: Plays Vince Guaraldi & Mose Allison

West Coast Icons Mose Allison and Vince Guaraldi are saluted by drummer Jerry Granelli along with pianist Jamie Saft and bassist Bradley Christopher Jones. The strong suit here is the lyricism of each artist, but Saft adds his own little embellishments the famed pianists as well. He gives a Herbie Hancock feel to the soulful drums on “Parchment Farm” and boogaloos on “Baby Please Don’t Go” with Granelli hitting hard in the pulse. Jones and Granelli bop hard on “Mind Prelude I” and deliver a rich conversation on “Mind Prelude 2” while everyone gets a bit kinetic with Jones bowing out the angular “Young Man Blues”. Granelli’s brushes are suave on the samba’d “Sitar Song” and slinks to “Everyone’s Cryin’ Mercy”. Clever covers.
