Rodney Whitaker: Common Ground

Famed Detroit bassist Rodney Whitaker takes on compositions by Gregg Hill with an ESPish team of post-boppers Terell Stafford/tp-fh, Tim Warfield/ss-ts-ss, Bruce Barth/p, Dana Hall/dr and guest vocalist Rockelle Fortin. Fortin’s sweet voice is bluesy on the hip title track, soft with Barth during “Phoenix” and steely with Warfield’s soprano for “A Cool Breeze Runs Through E. Lansing.” Whitaker’s bass line is lithe for trumpet and soprano on the gazelle sleek “Technocats” and sprints like an Olympian as the horns run to the tape on the torrid “Remembrance.” Hall and Whitaker have a nice wrestling match as they get the spotlight on the fun “Aftershock” and the waltzing “The Ringer” has the horns caressing the pulse. A real winner for the ears and tapping toes.
