Eric Hofbauer’s Five Agents: Book Of Water

Guitarist and composer Eric Hofbauer brings together a 3 horn front line of Jerry Sabatini/tp, Seth Meicht/ts and Jeb Bishop/tb in a loosely swinging session held down by Nate McBride/b and Curt Newton/dr. The songs are divided into chapters, with the general theme sounding like late period Mingus, giving a mix of blues and lots of freedom. The themes range from a kinetic and Monkish “Water Understands Civilization Well” that has lots of sharp angles, whereas the horns sway and swing to “Well Used, Adorning Joy” featuring the leader’s tensile guitar tones. Hofbauer and McBride veer back and forth as they’re surrounded by squeaks and squawks on “It IS Not Disconcerted” and the whole team puffs and forms fragments like a 1000 pieced puzzle on “Ill Used, Will Elegantly Destroy.” Recorded in studio before an audience, the music keeps your attention, and some of the sounds beg for a visual accompaniment.
