Guitarist and intermittent vocalist Nicky Barbato leads an eclectic team of Tony Mason/dr, Chris Anderson/b, guest Jon Irabogon/ts-key and a string quartet for a mix of originals and covers. The album opens with a mix of rock and strings on “Blues Chip” while searing into a wild polka for “Space Heater.” An ode to Kurt Vonnegut is featured on the free thinking “50 Dollar Chevy” and a handful of the songs are spacious and impressionistic sketches, as “Au Pair” includes synthesizer wallpaper, “Part of the Earth” includes sparkling guitar and “Mr. Anderson” uses wide open atmospheres. A cover of The Beatles’ “Norwegian Wood” is clear and sparkling, adding extra dimensions to a well known piece. Focusing on moods and dreams.
