Matt Ulery: Sifting Stars

Bassist Matt Ulery leads an intriguing 16member Sifting Stars Orchestra, combined with a five piece Axiom Brass band to mix woodwinds, voice, strings and horns to a rich ten song album. The large ensemble never sounds cluttered, rather you get luminous Old World strings and  horns teamed with Grazyna Auguscik’s soft voice on ”The Remanent of everything” and the delicate “Pictures In Grey,” both featuring melodic work by Rob Clearfield’s p iano. Katie Ernst tells a story over the horns on “I’m So Shallow” with the Axiom Brass creating rich textures on pieces like “Wicker Party” and a Verdian “I Have Such a Clown Face.” Impressively mature and thoughtfully romantic.
