Judy Night Quintet: Sliding On Glass

Judy Night brings here quintet for a sleek night at the 210 Club in Highwood, IL. She has a pair of guitarists, with TC Furlong on the pedal steel and  Brian Wilkie on the six stringer, which has the band mixing some fun moods as Jackson Kidder/b and Justin Kramer/dr supply the pulse as the leader switches between piano and synthesizer.

The team does a Moose Lodge take of “Witchita Lineman” with sighing steel strings while a coy read of the Christmas Carol “Do You Hear What I Hear” takes on a rich texture with the added twang. Night herself gets bluesy on Horace Silver’s “Lonely Woman” and delivers a gorgeous solo aria for Paul Simon’s “Cecelia.” On synth, she and the team get spacy for a take of the King Crimson ballad “Moonchild” which as Kidder’s bass forming soft chords and lines, while Kramer and Kidder dig deep for a post bopping read of “Scarborough Fair.” A clever mix of interpretations from Boomer radio hits.
