Joey Calderazzo: Live From the Cotton Club Tokyo Volume 1

Taking some time away from his regular gig with Branford Marsalis, pianist Joey Calderazzo comes to Tokyo with his own team of Orlando Le Fleming/b and Donald Edwards/dr for a wide ranging collection of mostly self-penned tunes. The soul cover, “Hats off To Rebay” displays all of Calderazzo’s charms; a warm and clean touch, lots of passion and a gift of inside jokes, here filled with hints of Monkish angles. The rhythm team gets sing-song as Calderazzo lilts on “Cianna” while the leader enters quietly for openers and pops the clutch to close on a dramatic modal “Manifold.” His deep lyricism is on display on “Free” and the chops for all are sizzling on the barbie for “The Mighty Sword.” Muscle and music.
