The “New” New Age…Flow: Flow

Sounds from Windham Hill return from the 80s as legendary guitarist William Ackerman teams with Fiona Joy/p-voc, Lawrence Blatt/g-uk, Jeff Oster/tp-fh and a handful of guests to give a 21st Century interpretation of what used to be called “New Age” music.

The genre holds up surprisingly well here, as Ackerman’s gorgeously classical strings create gentle moods on “Flow,” the soft and spacious “A Night in Nocele” with Joy, a folksy “Waiting for Sunshine” and a minimalist “Rest Now My Friend.” Wondrous piano and percussion  make for a flowing “Arrival” with Oster’s soft horn creating a pastoral backdrop on the warm “Waters Gather” and “Tenth Life,” which includes soft wordless voice. Spaciousness and shadows in the morning sun.
