Shirley Crabbe: Bridges

Shirley Crabbe uses her clear and Broadway toned voice in a collection of standards and her own compositions on this upbeat album. She’s teamed with Donald Vega-David Budway/p, Clovis Nicolas/b, Ulysses Owens Jr-Alvester/dr, Brandon Lee/tp and a violin quartet on optimistic pieces such as “Isn’t This A Lovely Day” and Milton Nascimento’s delicate “Bridges.” Crabbe does an impressive ride over the percussion on a dramatic take of “The Windmills of Your  Mind” while glistens with Nicolas on a coy “Taking a Chance on Love.” She gives a riveting read with strings on “Thief in the Night” while the closing hymn “Blessed Assurance” is as warm and comforting as they lyrics of hope themselves. Uplifting.
