Pablo Diaz Quinteto: Destemporizador

Drummer Pablo Diaz leads a flexible band from behind on a mix of bop and free form thoughts. He brings together a team of Enrique Norris/ct, Pablo Moser/ts, Paula Shocron/p to perform originals that sway from in the pocket post bop to outside yearnings. Diaz rides the cymbal for the elliptical pieces such as “Leon Bonsai” with Shocron’s assertive piano, and his brushes are deft as Moser takes his tenor on a Monkish bumpy ride midway through. The horns creates some rich harmonics as they sigh and the leader changes directions on “Serpiente De Fuego,” giving hints of Ornette Coleman’s Change of the Century quartet, while the team digs deep on a hip toe tapper on ”Lapso.” Lamonega’s bowed bass teams with piano dashes, trumpet snippets and sighing tenor on the thoughtful “Destemporizador” with Norris sounding lonely on the cornet before Shocron glides in on “Grafico.”  Pieces that feel like thick modern oil paintings in the local modern art museum.
