Audrey Silver: Very Early

Vocalist Audrey Silver displays a clever ability to select material on this wide ranging album. She has a warm and husky voice as well as clear enunciation to with her sense of swing, which is in strong display as she tackles material like Bobby Troup’s  “Lemon Twist” and slinks to Mose Allison’s “What’s With You.”  On the other hand, she can also find fresh and new material, such as material from poet Deborah Garrison who puts lyrics to Silver’s own “Goodbye New York,” sounding modern and contemporary with Lewis Nash’s brushes and Bruce Barth’s piano providing support along with the rest of the team. Of the band, Paul Beaudry/b, Alex Pope Norris/tp, Gary Versace/acc, Ron Affif/g and Tom Beckham/vib supply  excellent support throughout, giving an extra edge to “Surrey With The Fringe on Top” while Norris’ trumpet adds sepia tones to Stings’ Until.” Silver shows how to get dreamy as she is luscious on “When the World Was New” and sounds starry eyed on “Galileo.” A nice delivery of fresh material.
