LOSS LIEDERS…Semer Ensemble: Rescued Treasure

Here’s a group that takes you to a sound an era you don’t usually get exposed to. The Semer Ensemble performs music that goes back to the days of Berlin just before WWII. The songs are in German, Hebrew and Yiddish, and this live performance makes you feel like you’re in some nightclub in Munich during the Weimar Republic. This concert performance includes Cabaret vocals and piano as on traditional pieces “Ich Tanz Und Mein Herz Weint” or freilichs with accordion on “Simchu Bi Jeruschalajm/E’Ise Pele” . The vocals are rich in melodrama, melancholy and vibrato taking you to another time and place as on “Die Welt Ist Kelin Geworden” and the violin takes you to an old shtetl on “ Czardas” with the piano producing semi classical pieces like ”Lebka Fahrt Nach Amerika.” All that’ s missing is Marlene Dietrich doing a cameo with “Lili  Marlene.”
