Music is supposed to tell a story. Here are a couple interesting visual stories on storytellers.
The musical story of Janis Joplin has been told many times, but this one is possibly the most important as it brings Joplin’s background and world view into the picture to add extra texture. In between interviews with members of her bands Big Brother and Kosmic Blues Bands and reflections from artists like Bob Weir, Kris Kristofferson and TV host Dick Cavett, we are exposed to written letters between Janis and her family, revealing an intimate relationship and a tension of a young girl “pursuing dreams” as opposed to fulfilling parental expectations. Along with reflections from her sister, you get a tug of war between someone wanting to be an “artist” yet also wanting parental, personal and self approval.
As fans,we appreciate the path she took and simply regret that “we lost her too soon.” From a parental standpoint, it’s easy to cry out for this girl that was going down a self destructive path while still crying out for guidance from people she grew up with, loved and trusted. It’s a heart wrenching journey, but one worth thinking about.
The famed blues label Alligator Records is the reason that a 20th Anniversary tour is documented on this smoking dvd. Koko Taylor, Lonnie Brooks, Elvin Bishop, Katie Webster and Lil’ Ed & the Blues Imperials are featured in concert or in the studio, and it’s a hoot. Lil’ Ed is a monster on the frets during “Ed’s Boogie”, Elvin has a rich swagger on “El-Bo”, Koko and Lonnie have more fun than they know what to do with both together and apart, and together during “It’s A Dirty Job.” Then, with interviews with the likes of founder Bruce Iglauer, you get ready for some string bending and Strat busting fun. This is music cut to the marrow!
