UH HUH…Charles Bradley & The Menahan Street Band: Live From The House of Soul

Don’t think there are any more soul men like Otis Redding or Wilson Pickett around? Get a load of old schooler Charles Bradley on this dvd. He teams up with Dap Kings guitarist Thomas Brenneck as well as Homer Steinweiss/dr, Nick Movshon/b, Mike Deller/key, Dave Guy/tp, Leon Michels/ts and background vocalists Paul & Bill Schalda for a 30 minute stomping show in the backyard of Daptone’s House of Soul in Brooklyn.

The band mixes feelings and sounds of STAX and the Fabulous Flames as Bradley’s gritty voice rasps through a passionate “Love Bug” and preaches during “Where Do We Go From Here.” He can deliver a visceral ballad as on “Victim of Love” as well as howl during a stomping “Confusion.” After a swampy “Crying in the Chapel” (not the doo-wop tune), Bradley explains that “soul is a feeling where you expose your pain.” This guy sings like he’ s lived it, and wants you to hear the story. Great stuff!
