Lori Bell Quartet: Brooklyn Dreaming

Lori Bell brings uses flute and composing skills to great reward here with an all star cast of Tamir Hendelman/p, Katie Thiroux/b and Matt Witek/dr. Her own material has some impressive moments, with Thiroux’s bass creating a funk pulse on “Times Squared” and Hendleman delivering a bluesy bop on “Lower Manhattan” as foundations for Bell’s rich and textured woodwind. Witek’s brushes sound nifty on the hip and swinging read of Mingus’ “Nostalgia in Times Square” and long sepia shadows are created on “ Harlem Nocturne.” A Latin read of Monk’s “52nd Street Theme” is a clever idea while the title track shows the rich warmth of a tone that Bell can ring. As rewarding as Nathan’s Famous.
