TRIBUTE TO A LEGEND…Branford Marsalis Quartet: Coltrane’s A Love Supreme Live in Amsterdam

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of John Coltrane’s iconic A Love Supreme album, Okeh records is reissuing Branford Marsalis’ 2003 tribute and recreation of the album with his then-trio of Joey Calderazzo/p, Eric Revis/b and Jeff “Tain” Watts.” Included as a bonus is a dvd of gthe show as well as interviews with Miguel Zenon, Ned Goold, David Sanchez, but most importantly are the ones with the late Michael Brecker and Alice Coltrane. The latter is a 30 minute conversation with Marsalis and worth the purchase  price by itself.

Musically, you’ve got some pretty fiery blowing by Marsalis, and while every jazz fan has the 4 tunes down by heart, Marsalis and company keep the themes and solos sounding fresh. Yes, it’s a re-creation of sorts, but there’s no recreation; these guys are working up an inspired sweat! Marsalis is so focused during his solos that you feel that he’s been waiting his whole life for the opportunity to finally record the music that he was weaned on. Watt’s and Revis keep the butanes high and Calderazz is majestic on his chords and solos. A great addendum to the original
