Charles Davis: For the Love of Lori

Here’s a solid bop oriented session from the hands of tenor saxist Charles Davis. He leards a band with Steve Davis/tb, Rick Germanson/p, David Williams/b, Joe Magnarelli/tp and Neil Smith/dr through a welcome mix of originals, standards and jazz covers. The mix of all three horns in the front lines is a joy on easy bluesy boppers  such as “ Begues” while Davis displays a wonderfully rich tone on the ballad “What’ll I Do?”. A soulful “KD” features Magnarelli’s sweet trumpet, while Davis’ buttery ‘bone gets a spotlight on the crisp “Juliano”  and exotic “Into The Himalayas.” Germanson’s graceful touch glides on “Cedar’s Blues” and the horns create some harrowing harmonics on “I’ll Be Seeing You.” Fans of vintage Blue Note albums should flock to this one.
