Travis Sullivan’s Bjorkestra: I Go Humble

You gottta admit-the idea of an orchestra being dedicated to the compositions of Bjork is a niche of it’s own. Vocalist Becca Stevens has a crystalline voice that works wonders in a variety of settings and moods, while the idea of a big band arrangement of things like “Hyperballad” or “Venus as a Boy” is amazingly both clever, unique and common sense once you accept it on its own terms. Some intriguing mixes of piano and programming are featured on the ethereal “Unravel” while the even more synthesized “Hunter” includes a trumpet solo by Kelly Pratt that may make you think you’re listening to a Bitches Brew outtake.  Reharmonization of some of the songs such as “Army of Me” might make you wonder why they just didn’t write a new piece, but then they go and do wonders with the thoughtful “Joga.” Fascinating sounds and visions.
