Emy Tseng: Sonho

Here’s a wonderfully understated disc by a lady I’ve never heard before. Emy Tseng takes on material from Brazil to Freddie Hubbard on this highly satisfying session. Her voice is Gilberto styled in its soft tones, and it fits perfectly with samba material such as “Deixa” and “Bermbau.” The lithe support by acoustic guitars, bass, drums and percussion by a rotating team makes the music sparkle like morning dew, particularly on fragrant takes of “California Dreamin’” and “Little Sunflower.” The feel here, however is mostly Brazilian, and Tseng floats through the gentle breezes of “Aquelas Coisas Todas” like she was born in Sao Paolo. Wonderful release!
