Tenor saxist Melissa Aldana continues to create moody portraits on her albums, this time with Lage Lund/g-ef, Fabian Almazan/p, Pablo Menares/b and K ush Abadey/dr. Yes, there are moments of light swing, as on the spry “The Solitary Seeker” with some rich soloing by Almazan and Lund, and a playful pulse on “I Know You Know”. Most of the time, Aldana focuses on creating atmospheres, as her tenor sighs on high pitches over the tapping cymbals on the title tune, and is somber over the brushes and nocturnal piano on “Ritual”. There’s an indie feel on “A Purpose” and tenderness on the crying “Cone Of Silence”. More cerebration than celebration.
