Tenor saxst Kevin Sun brings together a mix and match team of Adam O’Farrill/tp, Dana Soul/p, Walter Stinson-Simon Willson/b and Matt Honor-Dayeon Seok/dr for a two disc collection of three multipart suites.
The first, “All This Stillness” has seven movements that have some loose post bop wailing on the tenor on “Frozen in Profile”, spinning piano on “From Some Unseen Center” and beating drums on”Ghosts of Repetition”. The three movement “Eponymous Cycle” has elegiac moments with O’Farrill and Sun, eventually fragmenting towards the final act. “The Depths in Slow Motion” has seven semi coherent pieces sandwich between a pair of intuitive “Depths” that feature more experimentation than cohesion.
