Mathias  Heise Quintet: Mouth Games

Danish harmonica man Mathias Heise brings together Jacob Christoffersen/p,  Pelle von Bulow/g, Thomas Fonnesbaek/b and Jeppe Gram/dr for a large palate of colors.  Using mostly originals, Heise does delve into a coule of covers, bopping hard with Gram on John Coltrane’s “26-2” and cozy for a two stepping read of “I Want To Be Happy”. The team gets funky on his “Searchlight Theory” and goes into the Latin Quarter for a soulful “”Para Mi Madre”Fonnesbaek gives a big intro to the Blue Note influenced “Funky Sister” and Heise blows smoke rings on “Blues For Toots”. Breezin’ not wheezin’.
