Sisters of Jazz: The Hidden Ladies of Jazz

The XX Chromosomed team of Benita Haastrup/dr, Ida Hvid/b, Catrine Ullerup Frolund/p,Lis Wessberg/tb and Pernille Bevort/ts swing on their own and while backing vocalist Anna Pauline Andersson on this recent release of songs composed by fellow females. The musicians show their easy swing chops with Bevort in warm tenor tone for Mary Lou Williams’ “Walkin’ and Swinging”. Andersson has a clear delivery, best reflected on some duets, such as one with Wessberg on gospel great Sister Rosetta Tharpe’s “ My Journey to the Sky” and a cozy “This Will Make You Laugh” alongside Hvid. Andersson tears into Lil Harden’s “Oriental Swing” with some plunger work by the trombonist, while clear and vo-cool on a couple Peggy Lee tunes, “It’s A Good Day” and a mellow “In The Days Of Our Love”. A swinging sorority.
