Jeff Coffin: Between Dreaming and Joy

If it’s a woodwind, it’s probably on this album featuring Jeff Coffin with a rotating team that includes Michael League-Felix Pastorius/b, Robben Ford/g, Chester Thompson/dr, Nigel Hall/key, and a rotating team of guests. The textures are thick for the kind of Afro Funk of “Vinnie The Crow” while things get a big spacey on the boogalooing “Busting Out All Over” along with David Rodgers’ B3 humming along. Coffin’s flutes get down with Chris Wood on ”Bird & Magic” while some pretty African folk sounds are supplied by a ‘bungee chair bass’ on the percussive “ When Birds Sing”. Coffin does it all with shakers and reeds on a truly grooving “Spinning Plates” and has the band sound like Herbie Hancock’s Mwandishi band on the funky “Ruthie’< rocking “In The Belly Of The Whale” and soulful “Tip The Band”. Head hunting!
