Griffin Woodard Group: Completion

It’s not many times you get an album led by a bass clarinet player, at least not one that isn’t cacophonic. Griffin Woodard is that man, and he makes it work well with a team of vocalists (Georgia Heers/Deneen Jones), saxist (Coleman Rose) and a rhythm team of pianist Abe Gold, bassist Miles Gilbert and drummer Hugh Kline. The reeds are rich and artsy with Heers on “Little Angel” and lovely “Marmalade” while Jones is haunting as she melds the vocals on the liturgical “Kyrie”. Woodard gets a bit free and frisky with Kline on “Alchemy” and the team bops hard on “Route 1” , with some wonderful soprano sax and bass clarinet post bopping on “Camillus”. Gold gets a spotlight on the pretty “Bridget’s Song” and the team gets reflective before upping the ante on “Completion”. Any tours coming up?
