Alan Pasqua-Peter Erskine-Darek Oles: Live In Italy

One of the best kept secrets of classy piano jazz trios is the team of drummer Peter Erskine, pianist Alan Pasqua and bassist Darek Oles. They’ve released a good number of albums over the years, and each one is a sublime cooker. This latest one, recorded in a COVID avoiding concert from November 2021 in Camogli, Italy, is a sublime mix of originals and a couple classics. Of the latter, “Con Alma” is a textbook example of how drums are to be played, as Erskine goes from soft stick patterns to creating a deep rivulet of joy. Pasqua displays soft hands around Oles’ solo on  “Nuages “ as well, while his own “Dear Chick” is a classy bopping tribute and “Agrodolce” is an impressionistic pastel. Erskine’s  brushes are like an Astaire soft shoe as they slowly build up on “Three-Quarter Molly” while relentlessly hip on “Turnaround”. Oles gets a spotlight on his own refined “Snowglobe” and is graceful on “New Hope”. What else are you looking for in a trio?
