Oscar Hernandez & Alma Libre: Vision

Pianist and composer Oscar Hernandez delivers a tasty mix of Latinized post bop on this latest album with Justo Almario/sax-fl, Jimmy Branly/dr, Oskar Cartaya/b and Christian Moraga/congas along with guests Aaron Janik/tp, Joe Locke/vib and Luisito Quintero/perc. Janik’s horn locks well with Almaro on the snappy “Vision” and with extra percussion, the team sizzles on the salsa’d “Ritmo Pa’Ti”. Almario’s tenor is dark and passionate on “Make the Move” with his soprano bopping with delight for “Don’t Stop Now”. The flutes float on the feathery “Tributo al Son” and optimistic for “So Believe It”. Hernandez himself delivers a sensuous intro to the sauntering “Dona Provi” and gets funky with Cartaya for the crisp “Virtually Here”. Joyful jams.
