Garry Dial and Jay Anderson: Living A Dream We’re Not In

Reflective and pensive originals by pianist Garry Dial and bassist Jay Anderson create a tapestry of thick and earthly tones on this collection of originals. The overall mood is subdued, which does not get in the way of rich lyricism and thoughtful themes. The songs mostly range in the 6-7 minute durations, with Dial romantic on “I Dare You”, nocturnal for “Dasha’s Dance” and impressionistic on “Basic Sadness”. During these tunes Anderson is supportive and supple, giving a warm intro to “Man With A Plan” before Dial taps into his inner Bill Evans, and giving a solo in the prismatic “Ostentagious” and going high pitched on “Kate!…”. The two yearn together side by side on “Fasting” and are at their  most upbeat for the charming “Drunk With Love”. Calm and calming conversations.
