Trumpeter and composer Skyler Floe leads a vintage sounding hard bop team of Sean Imboden/ts, Ateve Allee/p, Nick Tucker/b and Chris Parker/dr through a Blue Note-inspired session. The team bops around Allee’s ivories on “For Real” and the horns sparkle for “Odd Chicago”. Imboden delivers some creative angles along with unison lines around Tucker’s bass on “Opinionated” and the two are warm on “The Plunge”. Guest vocalist Samantha Louise is luscious around the gentle mallets as she’s serenaded by the horns on “Abstraction” and the team gets kinetic over Parker’s snappy drums for “Reason’s Last Pitch”.
