Eric Hofbauer & Dylan Jack: Period Pieces

Guitarist Eric Hofbauer takes time from his chair at the Jazz and Contemporary Music Department at the Longy School of Music of Bard College to put out a forward thinking album with drummer Dylan Jack, bassist Tony Leva and trumpeter Jerry Sabatini.  The moods and atmospheres are more musical abstractions, with Sabatini’s sole used of the euphonium created to form spacey gurgles and splashes on “Sighs In The Millions”, with his horn muted as it plunges on the plunking “Finding Baraka”. Hofbauer uses electronic concepts along with guitar, whirring around as Jack trudges for “Tread Lightly” and hovering  around Sabatini’s gasps for “With A Purpose”. A mix of distortion and drive surround Hofbauer’s solo on “Awake-Again” and the team gets aggressive on the closing “Galumphing Demons”. Sepia tones.
