Full-bodied toned tenor saxist Dino Govoni leads a strong post bopping team of Alex Sipiagin/tp-fh, Henry Hey/p, Michael Pope/b and Jeff “Tain” Watts through some clever originals. Watt’s was born for sessions like this, supporting the leader with nimble drum work on the cooking “Stories Passed” and supplying subtle brushes on the flowing “Point Turn” while cracking the whip on the stallions that cadence on “Edge Walker”. Hey chimes on the Coldplayish “Sublimate” and glides around Watts’ cymbal work on “Falling Ahead”. The horns are sleek as they meld together on “Cobalt” with rich tones glistening here for Sipiagin and Govoni, with the leader going bel canto on the gorgeous ballad “Ask Again”. Worth multiple listens.
