System 6: Tales From the Backyard

Leader Benn Clatworthy plays tenor and soprano saxes along with flute and bass clarinet as he produces his original compositions with a flexible team of Ron Stout/tp, Joey Seller/tb, Bryan Velasco/p, David Reynoso, Tyler Krieutel/dr and Yayo Morales/perc. The six Clatworthy and single Sellers tunes have a swinging, freewheeling,  Mingusy feel, circa Eric Dolphy, particularly when Clatworthy pulls out his bass clarinet to swing with Stout on the hip “The Vegan” and on the bold and brilliant “The Mystic Feminine Charms of Caesura Chonchalita”. Stout spits out the notes like watermelon seeds alongside Sellers’ urgent ‘bone work as Velasco and Reynoso team up on some nimble work before Kreutel takes over on “The Studio”. Kreutel is also featured on a hard driving “The Skipper Meets The Pharoah” that has Clatworthy on Impulse! drive, while the leader’s flute is soft and delicate with Kreutel’s brushes during “This One’s For Celia”. Finger snapping to Mingus fingers.
