Eric Wyatt: A Song Of Hope

Tenor saxist Eric Wyatt mixes John Coltrane styled post  bop and modal tones with a core team of Jeff Watts/dr, Donald Vega/p, Eric Wheeler/b and guests Kahlil Qwame Bell/perc, Chris Lowery/tp, Clifton Anderson/tb, Theo Croker/tp-fh and Samara Joy/voc on a mix of originals and covers. There’s a grace to his delivery on pieces like the quartet title piece while with Croker, the team flexes some muscles on “Blues for RH” and assert themselves on a piercing “One 4 Hakim”. Joy preaches a message on “Fragile Sting” with the leader on soprano, whle the two plead on the rubato’d “Sy Her Name.” Sparks really fly when Wyatt goes one on one on the court with Watts on “Tain Dance” and “Things to Come” , while a full ensemble features Vega’s latin pulse on “Fur Live”. Strong impulses in more ways than one.
