Veteran Crescent City blueser Jeff Chaz displays 50 shades of blue on this collection of mostly originals as he sings with dirt under his nails while playing guitar and bass accompanied on various forms of percussion by YEDI
The darker hues are delivered with murky trudges like “I’ll Be Sad With You Baby” and the searingly deep “Memories”. He shows some tasty guitar picking on the liquid “21 Instrumental” while strutting on “Pay It Back”. There’s a swing to his stride with the nifty easy feel of the shuffling “No Reason To Stay” and “Can’t Say No To You” while he digs into his inner Howlin’ Wolf when wailing on the defiant “The Color of “Fine”. Some humor is shown on the hoot of “Walmart Engagement Ring”, and speaking of “originals”, he takes the Rosie and Originals doo wopper from the 50s, “Angel Baby” and gives a falsetto street corner symphony. Throw a nickel into this guys hat!
