Joe Traina: Tip of the Hat

Clarinetist Joe Traina drinks deep from the well of Benny Goodman on this collection of standards and beyond with a mix and match team of Scott Wendholt/tp,  John Allred/tb, Dan Willis/ts, Memo Acevedo/perc, Pete McGuinness/voc and a core of Mike Karn/b, Jeb Patton/p and Scott Neumann/dr. Traina shows his wares during a virtuosic solo rendition of Artie Shaw’s “Cadenza” while in a small group is sublime along with Karn’s bass solo on “Lullaby Of The Leaves”. He gives a swinging and sublime take to “Stardust” alongside Wendholt’s horn and the team bounces buoyantly to the Latin feel of “Frenesi”. McGuinness lends his Chet Baker-fashioned voice o a hep cat “The Touch of Your Lips” and “Old Folks, while the team has fun with Willis in front on “Take the ‘A’ Train”. The Kingdom of Swing continues to have its subjects!
