Diego Rivera: Indigenous

Saxist Diego Rivera teams with a core of Helen Sung/p, Boris Kozlov/b, Donald Edwards/dr and guest trumpeter Etienne Charles on this muscular enterprise. On alto, he’s bright and gospel grooved with Charles on the upbeat “Marabi” while the two sizzle on the Latin ”Sombras Del Pasado”. On soprano, he gently teams with Sung on a lullaby read of Stevie Wonder’s “The Secret Life of Plants” and gently waltzes to “Asta Ta Malakia Sou”. Rivera’s alto is romantic with Sung on “Feli” and “sabor A Mi” while the team is soulful with Edwards’ lead in on “Shir LaShalom”. The mix of Latin, Greek and Israeli themes makes the album feel like a swinging warm blooded affair in the Mediterranean.
