Sandra Marlowe: The Heart Always Remembers

You can tell that this NoDak gone SFO resident Sandra Marlow grew up singing in revival meetings, as this album of hers in mostly a trio setting has her filled with soulful passion and conviction. She mixes up originals, blues and some cleverly arranged standards that have her pour out her heart in many a mood. She pops out of the birthday cake on the opening track, a latinized 6/8 rollicking take of “Fascinating Rhythm” that runs right over you with enthusiasm. She undulates around the suave piano and bass support of a drippingly seductive take of the Depression Era “When Did You Leave Heaven” and she can tell rich stories on a touching “In My Arms.” She shows she can work up a sweat, earnestly belting it out on “Corner Store Blues” and digging a deep trough on a misty “Trav’lin All Alone/Travelin’ Light” while the cymbals and ivories sparkle along with her on an ebullient “Let The Music Take You”. The lady sings with some fire in her marrow!
